Laura Toomey

Laura Toomey is a contralto based in Birmingham, in her final year of an undergraduate degree in vocal studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where she studies under Jonathan Gunthorpe.

She specialises in choral and consort singing with a keen interest in early music.

In addition to her studies, Laura was part of the 13th cohort of Genesis Sixteen (2023-24). She was also part of the James Bowman Young Artist programme with Vache Baroque (2025) and currently holds a position as an Enhanced Scholar with Ex Cathedra where she has appeared as a soloist. Alongside this, she regularly sings at the Birmingham Oratory.

Laura is also experienced in oratorio repertoire, singing across the West Midlands and further afield. Her soloist repertoire includes: Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Ex Cathedra), Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Hansel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Elijah. She is supported by the Josephine Baker Trust at RBC, and won the Birmingham Festival Choral Society Oratorio Prize (2024).

Laura has also undertaken roles in Baroque opera, playing the role of the Sorceress in RBC’s 2025 production of Dido and Æneas, an experience which she greatly valued.
